While landing an internship here at Stern may be difficult for some, things aren’t as bad as they seem. The majority of us do find something post-graduation, somewhere in the U.S. However, the same cannot be said for people aged 25 and under in Spain. Statistics show that over 50% of this demographic are unemployed. The reason for this is the end of Spain’s construction boom, where many teenagers found and eventually lost their jobs. The major problem is that many people in this demographic had left school early to take advantage of the abundance of construction jobs so they are now left without an income and without a degree. Moreover, some are graduating with degrees but are still left unemployed. Companies also have little incentive to hire young workers as the older employees have more experience in the field. As a result, experts estimate that around 500,000 young laborers will leave the country every year until 2020 just to make a living. The most popular destination for new jobs...

                As NYU students, we all know how painful our tuition is. Some of us have parents who have sold their first born (if not, an arm and a leg) for our education.  Others will simply have tens of thousands of dollars of student loans post-graduation. What’s worse is that our situation is not improving, as the US government plans on DOUBLING student loan interest rates from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1 st , 2012. Statistics show that student loans are the second largest source of consumer debt, more than credit card debt and only behind home mortgages. The average student debt is over $25,000 and some even have over $100,000. The picture seems bleak, to say the least. In addition to doing some “relationship building” with President Obama, Vice President of China Xi Jinping visits the U.S. to commence a new relationship with… Hollywood. DreamWorks Animation, responsible for creating the box-office hits Kung Fu Panda and Shrek , will partner with Shanghai Media Group and China Media Capital to produce Chinese films, television shows and live stage productions in China. This deal serves as a significant stepping stone into the Chinese film industry, which has been rapidly growing, while the U.S film industry declines. DWA hopes to piggyback off the success Kung Fu Panda 2 had in China (which raked in about $100m in 2011) to secure a strong position in Chinese film due to the predicted success of this industry over the next several years.
